League of Legends is a realtime strategy game based on 5v5 player vs player sessions. When you enter a session, or game, you decide to which lane you want to go to. This determines which role on the team you want to play. The roles are as follows:
ADC: The ADC, or Attack Damage Carry, is the member of your team that does everything in their power to become powerful with items that grant attack damage, which increases the damage that your auto-attacks do. Some skills' damage also scales off of your total attack damage. Typically, the ADC goes to the bot lane against the other team's ADC and support. The ADC has certain obligations to fulfill, just like the rest of their team.
Minions spawn at 1:30 each game. They waddle in a line all the way to lane to kill and be killed. The ADC's main responsibility during the early game is to not die and to "last hit" as many of these little suckers as possible. When you last hit a minion, you receive bonus gold for being the one to kill it. This is important because more gold means faster items. Fast items means killing people which means gold which means more items and so on. Melee minions are worth 21 gold, casters are with 16, and cannons are worth 46.
Support:
| Remember, your ADC is an idiot |
| Sightstone |
Later on in the game, your job both becomes harder and more fun. Good supports generally play champions that have a lot of utility built in such as crowd-control effects like stuns, silences, and knockups to name a few. These effects as well as heals and shields can turn the tide of any battle if used correctly.
Mid: Moving up the map we find the mid-laner. This lonely soul is very close in their job description to the ADC except for some key differences. USUALLY, the mid laner builds what is called AP, or ability power. Ability power boosts the power of magic-based skills. Like with the ADC, your job is to farm minions by last-hitting and not die. However, mids don't have a support, so warding is up to you. My main lane is Mid, so I'll be doing a lot more content directly related to this lane.
Usually, Mids have some kind of crowd control built into their kit of abilities like slows, stuns, and snares. However, these skills often do more damage than the support's because of the AP items that midlaners build.
Midlaners can also be assassin class champions who do a ton of damage in a short amount of time. This is called burst, and is a term I will use a lot when referring to midlaners.
Jungler: Jungling is hard. Really hard. You won't believe how really really mindbogglingly hard it is... and so on. If you read my last posting, an overview on jungling, you'll learn more. Basically, junglers help the top mid and bot lanes by helping them fight their opponents with higher numbers. If you're just starting out, I don't recommend trying jungling until you're fairly comfortable with the game in general. More to come on that later!
Top: Top lane is where the big mean tanks beat on each other with no real outcome until the jungler comes for a visit. Your job during the early game is the same as the Mid and ADC:
Don't Die
Farm minions
Don't Die!
Usually, top laners build items that give health and armor as well as magic resistance. These items allow them to become big, hulking, unkillable tanks. Their job is to become the front line in teamfights. When your front line consists of a big tanky top laner and often the jungler, your team will be able to focus on more important targets like the opposing ADC or midlaner, who is dealing most of the damage. When it comes to top laners, bigger is usually better, and you get to be a big scary tank running at people and making them afraid.
Too long; didn't read:
